The Canadian city of Montreal is home to more people than any other city in the world, and the Foundation of Greater Montr ? 'al wants to make sure that doesn't change.

The foundation, which is the largest community foundation in Quebec, says it wants to "become a living laboratory for philanthropy in Montreal, Quebec, and Canada," the Globe and Mail reports.

"In order to bring about the changes our world truly needs, philanthropy itself must renew its practices and better align them with the needs of the people it aims to serve," says President and CEO Karel Mayrand.

"That is why FGM, through every aspect of its work, aspires to become a living laboratory for philanthropy in Montreal, Quebec, and Canada."

In 2022, the foundation gave $34 million to 458 community organizations in the Montreal area, up 40% from the previous year, the CBC reports.

"We have rethought our ways of working, so as to better embody the values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion that are at the core of our action," Mayrand says.

The money went to everything from health and education to ecological transition and the fight against poverty, the foundation says.
