The Moby Dick Manoeuvre: How Charity Organisers Harpoon Sydney'S Wealthy 'Whales'

Every year, the world's richest people gather in Sydney to raise money for children's hospitals, and this year's event is no exception.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports Australia's richest person, mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, donated $5 million to the 26th Gold Dinner, the single-largest donation in the fundraiser's history.

Rinehart, who is worth an estimated $37.6 billion, was unable to attend the event herself, but daughter Ginia was there to accept the donation on her behalf.

Rinehart's donation helped make last year's dinner, which raised $19.2 million, the most ever for the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation.

"We are not asking for ourselves, we are asking for the children's hospitals," says Rinehart's son, Joshua, who co-chairs the fundraiser with his mother, Linda Penn.

"We seem to find the big donors every year," adds Penn, who tells the Herald her policy is "just say yes to everything! We are not shy people, we try to find out what cause resonates with people and try and align with that."
