Philanthropy Is about Empathy

"Philanthropy is about empathy.

The connection it brings is fundamental to a healthy society.

A life well lived," writes Andrew Achates in the Guardian.

That's the message he's pushing in the UK, where the government is trying to encourage wealthy philanthropists to give more to the country's cultural sector, which, according to the UK Giving Report 2023, has seen its charitable giving drop by more than half to less than 1%.

"The question they are asking about how to encourage more philanthropyin particular from the wealthyis important," Achates writes.

"But the answer is that they must build a society which values more than just money."

That starts with "empathy," he writes.

"A society in which people have empathy, can express their creativity, and in which they care about all the elements which make for a life well lived, including culture."

To that end, the Cultural Philanthropy Foundation has launched a campaign to "celebrate the 8 Types of Impact of Culture and Heritage, not just economic value," Achates writes.

The foundation has created a tool to do just that, listing eight types of impactfrom "the benefit of the experience of engaging with culture and heritage" to "the benefit to the individual in society Read the Entire Article
