Service Learning Initiative Celebrates Community Partners

"We can always count on them and their uplifting personalities, and we can't thank you enough for partnering with us!" That's what Lisa Bowers, director of the Service Learning Initiative at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, had to say at a recent event to thank the hundreds of community partners who've helped the school's service-learning program go from strength to strength.

The initiative works with local businesses, government agencies, and other organizations to give students hands-on experience working in the real world, and it recently celebrated its four-year anniversary with a party at Noodles Italian Kitchen, Arkansas Matters reports.

There, guests were given swag and entered into a $100 gift card raffle, which was won by the Deaf United Organization.

"None of these benefits would be possible without the many hours community partners provide to students to gain these skills," says a post on the Service Learning Initiative's website, which notes that service-learning courses are credit-bearing and provide "invaluable skills to students as they transition their knowledge from the college classroom to real-world experiential learning opportunities."
