What started out as a small group of women at Michigan's Oakland University has grown into what's said to be the largest philanthropic organization in the state.
The Detroit Free Press reports the university's Women & Philanthropy group has awarded more than $100,000 in grants to nine projects since it was formed last year.
The group's president, Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, tells the Free Press the grants come from the university's annual "advance" fundraiser, which last year brought in more than $50 million.
Pescovitz says the money is used to fund everything from after-hours crisis counseling to a new greenhouse that will help year-round growing and research.
