"You may think of a haircut as not such a big deal," Pittsburgh native Sandahl Taylor tells WTAE.
"It can really change somebody's life."
And that's exactly what the Mrs. US Galaxy 2024 is doing, giving free haircuts to veterans, first responders, and others through her philanthropic platform Changing Hearts, WTAE reports.
"It's my small way that I can use my skill for good," the licensed cosmetologist and cosmetology instructor says.
"Everyone has a skill, and we believe that if we all start using grooming for good, we really can make a difference not only in our generation, but for generations to come."
Taylor, who's married to an Army veteran and a Navy veteran, says her father suffered a major heart attack when she was 17 and her heart rate went up permanently.
So when most people were high school, "I was trying to figure out how to navigate running a household, and that left him completely paralyzed for the remainder of his life," she tells WTAE.
So when she turned 37 in July, she asked people for their birthday to help care for the homeless, with the hope of having even more of a reach.
