When Brooklyn Hawkins rang the bell as a newly cancer-free 17-year-old, she was also trying to imagine her future.
"I knew there was a bigger picture," the Oklahoma State University sophomore tells CBS News.
That bigger picture led her to found In the Middle of a Miracle, a nonprofit that raises pediatric cancer awareness by focusing on teenagers.
Hawkins was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at age 17, but she beat the disease and is cancer-free today.
Now a college freshman, Hawkins is continuing her work with the nonprofit as its local philanthropy.
"We want to paint the state purple," she tells CBS.
"You have to make a lot of decisions about your future," Hawkins says.
"To build a business or nonprofit from the ground up, he advised, you have to maintain."
