Civil society must develop compelling alternatives to authoritarian rule.
Philanthropic funders can play an important role in connecting Americans to each other and their own history.
The most strategic funders focus on one or more of the following goals: changing the dynamics that favor authoritarianism; building pro-democracy forces capable of overcoming it; and creating the conditions needed for a pluralistic, egalitarian, 21st-century version of liberal democracy.
